CAPE COD INSPIRATION

This project was a great example of how one room can serve many purposes in a well-thought out, beautiful and personalized space.

I met with a wonderful family who wanted a relaxing family room. This was the most-used room in the house, where the family met after work and school each day, and had dinners together, and where the family dog would spend days relaxing by the TV.

Originally, the room had a basic setup and a closed-in feeling: An outdated large dining room table that took up most of the space, an older couch that did not reflect the nature of this young family. There was no space to store children’s toys, which added to the feeling of clutter and lack of space.

The family loves the beach and wanted something that reminded them of Cape Cod and an annual family trip to Ireland. Incorporating some elements of both was important to feel connected and comfortable in the space.

Use of natural wood, white furniture and gray/blue pallet allowed us to create a bright, airy feel of the beach while at the same time use of traditional shapes hinted at the beauty of traditional Irish style. We rounded up the look with some great family portraits and pictures from their travels.

The final design featured a large sectional with a work station for kids/parents, a dining room set that fit the family daily use and special get-togethers. The room was complete with new storage for kids toys, a set of comfortable recliners and, of course, a special space for the dog to relax.
